Postpartum Support
The postpartum period is so often centred around the baby, with very little care or support offered to the parents themselves. There can be pressure to return to “normal” life after just a few months, whatever that even means after such a profound transition. Modern society rarely honours postpartum in the way many traditional cultures once did, and many still continue to do around the world today.
You may have heard terms such as “the first forty days” or “the fourth trimester” used to describe the immediate period after birth as you settle into life as a new family. In many cultures, this time is considered sacred. A period where the birthing parent is deeply nourished, cared for, and supported while they recover and bond with their baby.
But really postpartum spans far longer than a few months. Naturopathic postpartum care is about replenishing what pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood can take from you. Rebuilding nutrient reserves, supporting hormones and recovery, protecting sleep and mood where possible, and helping you feel more like yourself again in a season that asks so much of you.
I work with new parents, second- and third-time parents, and parents whose youngest is now three or five or older and still don’t feel quite right. It is almost never too late to fill your cup back up. My approach is informed by both traditional postpartum practices that honour nourishment, rest, community, and care, and evidence-based naturopathic support. I also encourage families to make the most of their village wherever possible, whether that’s setting up meal trains, or receiving support around holding boundaries and asking for what they need. Every bit of support can make a meaningful difference.
Postpartum lasts longer than a trimester. Replenishment can start whenever you’re ready, even years on.
Who this is for:
Parents in the postpartum season, when life, identity, and routines can shift so much.
Those experiencing postpartum depletion (e.g. exhaustion, low mood, hair loss, brain fog, poor immunity).
Those who are breastfeeding and wanting gentle support for both their own wellbeing and their baby’s nourishment.
Those returning to work and trying to function on depleted reserves.
Parents whose youngest is one, two, three or more years old and who still don’t feel like themselves.
Those who’ve had more than one pregnancy close together.
Those who are hoping to try for another baby but are exhausted by the thought of it.
Women (including those assigned female at birth) who feel their hormones are still out of balance many months or years postpartum (e.g. changes to periods and mood changes)

Gentle support for hormone shifts and emotional wellbeing
Realistic expectations for the early weeks with a new baby or for the current phase of postpartum life that you’re in.

Ongoing support during the weeks, months and years after birth.
Often during the early weeks and months postpartum, baby is the main focus of care and the parents can be left behind. The first 12 weeks are tender and transformative. They are a crucial period of healing, recovery, and adjustment. This program makes sure you are supported too.
This program can also be customised to support parents regardless of how many years postpartum they are.
Focus may include recovery, breastfeeding nutrition, mood and nervous system support, rebuilding energy and addressing nutrient depletion.
What we work on together:
Nutrient replenishment. Iron, B12, zinc, iodine, omega-3s, vitamin D - many of these nutrients are depleted through pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. We assess what’s actually going on and rebuild reserves in a considered, supportive way.
Hormonal recovery. Hormones including oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid, and cortisol shift dramatically postpartum. While they often recalibrate over time, there is also a lot we can do to support balance when things feel out of sync.
Breastfeeding support. Support with supply, nutritional needs for both parent and baby, and symptoms that may arise as feeding patterns evolve (such as mastitis or thrush).
Sleep, mood and nervous system. Postpartum sleep deprivation isn’t just tiring, it is physiologically dysregulating. We focus on small, realistic supports that help regulate your system within the constraints of this season.
Weight, body composition, cycle return. Your body settles into its own new rhythm in its own time. Rather than focusing on “getting back” to anything, we support the underlying systems so your body can find its natural equilibrium.
Return to self. You’re not who you were before - and you’re not meant to be. This is a process of rediscovering yourself, and gently coming home to who you are now in this new season of life.
Blood testing. When working with parents in the early postpartum period, I often recommend a 6-week postpartum blood test for the birthing parent to help identify any nutrient depletion early and guide recovery.
Blood testing can also be helpful further into the postpartum journey, allowing care to be tailored to where your body is at.
I work with optimal reference ranges, which can differ from standard laboratory ranges. What is considered “normal” on a lab report may not always reflect optimal levels for recovery, energy, and overall wellbeing.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Whenever you feel ready. Some clients book their first session around two to six weeks postpartum; others at six months; others a year or more later. There is no wrong time.
-
Yes, with the right knowledge. Some herbs are contraindicated; others actively support lactation. I only use what is safe and evidence-based for breastfeeding.
-
Please also speak with your midwife, GP or maternal mental health team. Naturopathic care supports alongside proper mental health care, it doesn’t replace it. I’ll always ask, and I’ll make sure you’re supported in the right ways. There are also wonderful services available such as Little Shadow and Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Aotearoa.
-
Absolutely. Postpartum depletion can sit with women for years. It is never too late.

No. I work with clients across New Zealand via video consultation. I currently only work online.

This depends on your health history and goals as the program is customised to meet you and your needs. Following a Postpartum Planning Session, if you are interested in continuing to work together I will send through a PDF outlining what the program will look like along with pricing and payment plan options.
-
That’s great! We still start with the Postpartum Planning session as this acts as an initial consultation and helps me create the customised program for you.
-
Naturopathic care complements conventional medical care. It does not replace it. I’ll always ask what you have in place already and work alongside that. I’m happy to communicate with your other health providers where it’s necessary or helpful. It can be really helpful to work with a range of different medical professionals (such as GP, midwife and naturopath) as we all have different strengths.
